YTL hires Microsoft Malaysia MD

YTL E-SOLUTIONS BHD [] has appointed former Microsoft Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Yasmin Mahmood as executive director and former MALAYSIAN AIRLINE SYSTEM BHD [] managing director Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Mohd Dahalan as an independent director.

At the same time, it announced the resignations of siblings Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong and Datuk Mark Yeoh Seok Kah from their executive directorship, also with immediate effect.

Yasmin was Microsoft Malaysia MD from 2006 to December 2009, while Ahmad Fuaad helmed MAS from April 2004 to August 2005.
Ahmad Fuaad is also a director of HLG CAPITAL BHD [] and Tokio Marine Insurans (Malaysia) Bhd.

YTL E-Solutions, one of the four WiMAX licensees in the country, said it had redesignated its independent director Mohamad Zain Mohd Zainal Abidin as non-independent non-executive director.


Former AOL VP launches myprize challenge

YTL Communications, a communications provider poised to launch Malaysia’s first nationwide 4G network, has officially announced the $1,000,000 ‘mYprize’ Global Developer Challenge led by Rick Robinson, the former vice president of social products at AOL and now SVP of Customer Experience at YTL.

“I believe creative developers are driven by more than money, but this is a terrific way to help them afford to realize their goals,” said Robinson, who has also launched Sonicgleek Productions. “We are looking for software, apps, hardware and even simply well-crafted ideas in the Global Challenge. Everyone has a chance to win; they are only bound by imagination.”

The unique competition is designed to inspire entrepreneurs and innovators around the world to create exciting new 4G mobile Internet products and services principally for Malaysian deployment, and further positions the country as a center of 4G excellence.

YTL needs 1,920 base stations in Peninsular

KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, one of four WiMAX licensees in the country, has yet to roll out its WiMAX service, but it has an ambitious plan to hook up the entire nation, starting with the peninsula, by 2010.

With an investment commitment of some RM2.5 billion, YTL’s proposal won the grudging approval of other WiMAX players in the country, who agree that nationwide connectivity is necessary to unleash the full potential of mobile WiMAX.

Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether the deployment of the network will achieve the lofty goals YTL has set for itself.

YTL Comms appoints Clearwire VP to board director

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, November 16, 2009 – YTL Communications Sdn Bhd today announced the appointment of Ali Tabassi as a director to its board. Mr. Tabassi is senior vice president of global ecosystem and standards for Clearwire and as such is responsible for driving industry standards internationally to achieve Clearwire’s corporate objectives. He also leads the company’s global advocacy program and its network engineering, operations, product development, and IT services in Ireland, Spain, Belgium, Romania, Germany and Poland as the CTO of Clearwire International.

Lee is CEO of YTL Comm

MOBILE Internet service provider YTL Communications Sdn Bhd has appointed Wing K. Lee as its chief executive officer (CEO).

A graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, US, Lee has worked for 15 years at Sprint Nextel, where he held senior management positions driving product development for the company’s WiMAX division.

He also founded and managed Sprint’s Technology Innovation Programme, and led Enterprise Architecture for the launch of the first nationwide wireless data network in the US.
